ALPHA
& OMEGA
(UK)
ROOTS OF DUB FUNK
5 - Track 4 - "BUSH GANJA DUB"
THE MUSIC
ALPHA & OMEGA come from the roots. Not the
usual Jamaican reggae roots, but the music they make is certainly roots
dub as most classical reggae fans would recognize it. Mysterious and
deep, their dub carries echoes of '70's reggae whilst offering no concessions
to revivalism. In doing so they have helped create a movement born from
UK sound- systems such as Jah Shaka and now acknowledged as a separate
musical form in its own right, blurring the boundaries between conventional
reggae and ambient instrumental music.
While they are hardly reggae stars in the accepted sense, preferring
a modest, almost backroom approach, their name has become a byword for
powerful, mesmeric music with an atmosphere and quality all of it's
own. To date they remain a cult act, albeit one with a fiercely loyal
and still growing following in the UK.
Alpha & Omega (John and Christine) sold their first album by mail
order on home-made cassettes. Their debut album proper "Daniel
In The Lion's Den" was issued on their own eponymous label in 1990
to instant acclaim by the UK roots cognoscenti. Restless, raw and unapologetic,
it defined their stance at the forefront of the new British roots movement.
A&O's often eerie use of keyboards, melodica and studio effects
lends their music a subtlety rarely encountered in contemporary music.
Within these mesmerising grooves lies a wordless message that's every
bit as urgent and compelling as the one passed down by their Jamaican
reggae mentors.
As one of Britain's most enigmatic bands, Alpha & Omega are followed
by a growing band of admirers, a testament to their undoubted musical
artistry. Unwilling to either stand still or compromise the spiritual
content of their work, they continue to uniquely explore the boundaries
of modern dub music.
