Roots of Dub Funk - 'Return to the Controls'

Dubclash (Simon Gains) has been a fan of reggae and dub for many years and cut his musical teeth, playing guitar for a ska/punk band. Not wanting to push the band too deeply into dub and roots he decided to quit the band to record his own ideas.

Among his influences Simon lists King Tubby, Scientist, Mad Professor, Niney the Observer, and the late great Augustus Pablo. Another favorite is the mixing wizardry of Adrian Sherwood (On-U Sound). In fact hearing Dub Syndicates "Pounding System" had a big impact on Dubclash and he rates it as among one of the best dub albums of all time.

Simon is a big fan of analogue synthesis, spring reverb, and real tape echo which he uses and abuses to the full since part of the Dubclash trademark is the grainy sound which brings warmth to the dubs. Having said this Simon's no technophobe and uses a computer sequencer with hard disk recording plus sample editing facilities.

During the spring of 2000 the first Dubclash 7" single was released on Dubhead entitled "Set A New Course" with the Twilight Circus on the flip side. The single has since enjoyed world-wide airplay and has long since sold out. A full length Dubclash album is now in the works.
