Roots of Dub Funk 2 - 'Jah Witness'

DUB FARM: Sam Godin from New York, USA.

Dubfarm cultivates roots reggae and modern electronic sounds to create an original style that is not "techno" dub, but are not entirely Jamaican either.

The Music
Live drum and bass tracks are always the foundation, the roots. From there, each song grows on its own until it is mixed down ina dubwise style. Usually this is done in the old-school Jamaican way of dropping sounds and effects in and out spontaneously "on the fly" in real time, in the tradition of Lee Perry, King Tubby and Augustus Pablo. Still, the Dubfarm crew is no stranger to modern technology, and no piece of gear, new or old is safe from being manipulated into the mix.
Dubfarm chief rocker, Sam Godin has been performing in reggae bands for over ten years, since he was a junior in high school. He has written music on the John Brown's Body release "Among Them" (Shanachie Records) which has appeared in Hollywood films and received critical acclaim from many publications including Rolling Stone, High Times, and The Village Voice. He has played reggae keyboards in over 1000 live shows and toured the United States, Jamaica and Japan with John Brown's Body and The Tribulations band. This gave him the opportunity to perform with and learn from many of the true masters of reggae music including The Wailers, Burning Spear, Black Uhuru, Culture, Israel Vibration, Jimmy Cliff, Mad Professor and Lee Perry.
Another contributor to the Dubfarm sound is Tommy "Jah Bunny" Benedetti who is recognized as one of the hardest roots reggae drummers in the business, and is the resident drummer of John Brown's Body. Paul Merrill, (who also plays trumpet for the Phil Woods band) adds a mellow tone that melts in your ears. Nate "Salis" Richards plays the sweet licks on the guitar and Sam Godin rounds out the sound with crucial dubwise basslines, keyboards, melodica and studio wizardry.
Recently, Dubfarm has been commissioned to remix a song from the new Krishna Das album "Breath of Heart" (produced by Rick Rubin). The track will appear on a compilation CD to be released by TriLoka / Polygram records summer 2002 and will include tracks by Bebel Gilberto, Manu Chao and Peter Kruder of Kruder & Dorfmeister. At the moment, a new Dubfarm album is in the process of being mixed and should be out later this year.
