| Dubital Roots of Dub Funk 2 - 'The Style' DUBITAL: Raffaele Ferro and Matteo Magni from ITALY Dubital was formed in 1993 as a Dub interpretation of a Dancehall production. The first demos were, in fact, created exclusively for the use of several local DJs. The band's encounter with Suite Inc. was fundamental in the transformation of their sound and helped it evolve from electronic dub into a sound that acquires its own originality, drifting away from classic dub while simultaneously remaining faithful both to dub roots and mentality. The Music Dubital began working on harmonies and melodies and this atmosphere becomes an indelible mark, perfectly fused with an atmosphere that links the infinite dimensions of Dubital's sound to an energetic electronic sound. Thus the pair became a band and they began to perform live. Applying Dub Theory to the live show, the concert becomes transformed into a true mixing session, where both mixer reigns on stage and dub master continuously interacts with the other musicians, turning them into "living channels". From the first performances - B Movie Show with Minox and 4Dkiller - to the most recent, the live show has evolved and now includes scenographic elements and a video staging, which is exclusively produced and executed by 'Suitevision'. After the first live shows, the band begins an in-studio experience, which is in great part, a re-elaboration of much of the material that had previously been produced in Dubital's home studio, recorded on a 4-track system. The project involves Mad Professor, an historical figure on the international dub-reggae as well as creator and producer of the celebrated Ariwa Sound label: Lee Perry, U Roy, Maka B, Pato Banton etc. and co producer for Sade, Massive Attack, Beastie Boys. He worked in the studio with Dubital for some days realizing various mixes of "Boss Dub", and "Ignoranza & Cultura" and creating "X.tra Boss", his first true "ambient" experience. This important relationship brought two vinyl records: "Mix Ignoranza e Cultura" than " Dubital EP". Finally in 97 Suite inc release their first album "Lite" in which are involved Mad Professor and Minox. So Dubital start for the first time propaganda in Magazines and TV-Radio shows. From that time the two original creators of Dubital take part as engineer and musicians to the realizing of other Suite inc productions " Beats and Movements" Technophonic Chamber Orchestra album, "Sex Crimes and Toys" by 4Dkiller and with their own interpretation remix on "U Turn" Minox and Lydia Lunch CD single. After plenty live shows and studio experiences between 97' and 99' people started to open their gates to other new "musical experiments" above all, Dub-Reggae. In fact in 2000 Dubital produced for the main label's new division Suiteque "The Dub Lab" compilation, a sampler rich in musical innovations and foreign collaborations transformed successively in a real amazing Dub show gaining a great audience in all the national area. In 2001 the first album-compilation of a Suiteque series "Suitable #0 the psycho lounge collective and "Suitable #1 the radical house connection", compilers and producers for the Dub chapter "Suitable #2 the dub adventurers. This compilation features some of the new project matured in The Dub Lab (the Dubital's virtual/physical experimental studio zone) like Flappa and Nagades, The Delegators, and some established dub artists like Mad Professor, Zion Train and Twilight Circus Sound System. The Dubital's affection in collaborations goes forward in their new album "Conversations" a mostly vocally based dub auto portrait. Accompanied by Mad Professor (strangely not involved as remixer but as singer!) and Zion Train with their backing base house-dub restyling of the track "The Ghost's party", Dubital gave an example of the new in Dub studio experience, mixing again unpublished tracks recorded on 4 track system, enriched in new grooves, plenty of live musicians, singing voices and harmonies. They also produced for Suite inc a video documentary named "Dub Conversation" built on some friendly interviews with Neil Fraser (Mad Professor) and DJ Perch (Zion Train) shot during their last live and studio experience with Dubital in Italy. It shows simultaneously the Dub story and philosophy from the perspective of two different and parallel artists and labels like Ariwa and Universal Egg, embracing also an educational conversation about the "hard" but "free" expressive life of an independent music label.
