Roots of Dub Funk - 'The Return of Sleng'

Daniel Bosshard a.k.a. The Interruptor lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland. His music ranges from Ragga to Drum 'n' Bass with a strong affinity to the sound of seventy's DUB music. Further ingredients in his unique approach to dance music are Latin, Jazz and sometimes House.

The Music
'I got first attracted to Jamaican music by Bob Marley's "Coming in from the cold". By the time of the mid eighties I knew a good share of his songs by heart. Gradually I found out that there was more to this music than just Marley and I started to listen to all sorts of classic reggae. My favorites at that time where songs like "Fire Man" by Burning Spear, "Ravers" by Steel Pulse or Black Uhuru's "Guess Who's coming to dinner". At the same time I started to record my own reggae riddims on a 4 track recorder using just a drum machine, a bass guitar, my mom's piano and my Saxophone. I eventually enhanced the studio with a computer, synth and sampler. Although I knew these new machines would offer a whole universe of new possibilities I still focused my attention on reggae riddims and natural sounding timbres. From the early nineties on I also began to soak up influences from Hip-Hop and Dancehall'.

'A turning point however was the autumn '94 when a certain sound from the UK called "Jungle" reached my ears for the first time. This style was evolving very fast. I had finally found a playing field where I could fuse together my Reggae background with all the computer age tricknology. What followed was a series of tracks, which combined Reggae and Jungle-breaks in different manners. Among these is "The Return of Sleng" which is included on the new Tanty Records album "ROOTS OF DUB FUNK". I pushed the boundaries further with other fusion's for example the dub/house track "Dance a Yard" which was done as part of the Dub Funk Association and can be found on their latest album "SOUNDS OF THE HEAVYWEIGHT" (TNTYCD 005)'.

The Studio
'I am a big fan of the warm electric and acoustic sounds of the pre-digital era but still I would not want to give away the new recording technologies like hard disc recording, sequencing and mixing automation.
I like to combine sounds and technology from the seventies with the possibility to edit all aspects of the music - thus allowing control over details that would otherwise be left to coincidence.

For the tracks included on Tanty Records "ROOTS OF DUB FUNK " and "SOUNDS OF THE HEAVYWEIGHT" the following set up was used:
Emu-Sampler E4k
Yamaha Digital mixing desk O1W
Yamaha Synthesizer CS1x
Clavia Nordlead (Virtual Analog Synth)
PC with Logic Audio (Midi Sequencer & Hard Disc Recording)
Tape echo (self made out of a reel to reel tape)
Tape deck (used for compression and distortion of some sounds)
Real reverb (guitar amp + microphone set up in the hallway)
