ROOTS OF DUB FUNK
4 - Track 5 - "BORN AFRICAN"
THE MUSIC
I have got a cosmic
secret, the waxing moon 2 weeks before the full moon is always a good
time for me to start to lay down basic grooves ,bass lines, melody ideas....a
good puff of home-grown ganja mix always help to set the mood ..
I live in Australia, it gets sweltering hot in summer, the best way
to check the groove is by cranking up the system, walk outside the house
and listen to the dub beats rocking the house, if it's shaking the foundations,
filling the house in a positive way, getting me skanking to the rhythms
& feeling happy, I know I am onto a good start....
I saw Bob Marley
live in concert in Sydney 1977 and I remember being blown away by the
huge bass sound, the sub frequencies and it's power, it was rocking
the auditorium BIG TIME! So for me Bass line comes first, everything
else is icing on the cake. so to speak!
This Bob Marley initiation to reggae -dub style left a profound mark
on me, and that's the sound I aim to recreate when working dub/style,
My influences are the Ol' School: Lee Perry, King Tubby and this excellent
Bob Marley dub translation by Bill Laswell,
I also caught Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare and Michael Rose in a small
club last year, the music was so up lifting and very inspiring ,I felt
high and recharged for weeks after that, very magical !
I have been writing & mixing music since the eighties, did work
projects in a lot of diverse styles but Dub always a favourite love
tweaking the delay machine, playing with reverbs and FX, I use different
degrees of reverb on each instrument, even Kik drum has got some rev
on to make it stick in the right place....
