ROOTS OF DUB FUNK 6: Track 4 - "ISLAND REBEL"

THE MUSIC

Originally from Southend, he first explored the art of sampling using software on my Amiga 500 home computer in 1993.
"In '99 I purchased my MPC2000 and began making hip-hop beats inspired by De-La-Soul and DITC. As my style progressed I started collecting reggae vinyl and began DJ'ing at reggae and hip-hop nights weekly in clubs and bars in Portsmouth".

After more than 10 years experimenting in his bedroom studio, Richie Phoe finally removed his headphones and decided it was time to introduce his music to the outside world.

Richie sent out his first 5 demo CD's and received an instant reply from BBC Radio1 Dj Rob Da Bank, confirming that his tracks would be played on the "one music" show and the ever popular "blue room" show. Being played on Radio1 along side some of his favourite reggae artists gave him the confidence to continue sending out his demo's to other Radio1 Dj's, and more radio play would follow from Steve Lamacq (Lamacq Live) and Huw Stephens (One Music).

Around the same time, Richie was also being played regularly on local Juice FM, being supported by the "Morning Glory" show, "Afro Base" and the Demo Clash.

Richie soon garnered interest from numerous recording labels, including the popular Grand Central Records and was personaly commisioned by Rob Da Bank to remix a Max Sedgley track on Rob's Sunday Best label. A Jon Kennedy (grand central) remix then followed suit.

He now resides in Brighton where he continues to play reggae in clubs and bars and has recently played on Brighton's Juice FM.
