The VIKING (USA) ROOTS OF DUB FUNK
6: Track 14 - "MGD" My first instrument was drums, which I studied and played professionally (and still do ) or the last 14 years. I currently make my living playing drums around the globe for all sorts of groups and events. I also make some of my money from composing jingles for tv commercials. I play all styles jazz/world/electronica/ reggae/blues etc and enjoy doing that. I believe in good and bad music, not good and bad styles of music. I live between NY , Hong Kong and Japan mostly. I am pretty much self taught on all instruments and on my production skills…or lack thereof LOL! At 28 I still have time to really get good at what I do. Every project or track is different so I take this standpoint on mixing producing and putting the track together, I don't really have a set list of procedure that I go through to develop a track I am working on for someone else or myself. I kind of play it by ear, perhaps I will lay the drums down first, then bass then all the candy on top, or perhaps I will do the bass first and go in the opposite order. One thing I that is sort of consistent is that I usually do all my processing of the tracks/sounds after I have all the raw material recorded. Again in this stage I kind of go by the seat of my pants and see where that takes me versus a tried and tested method of 'dubbing' tracks out. I also like to fool around with the many great free plug ins available online by up and coming programmers, some are brilliant and will completely change the direction of a tune based on the effect I can get from them, I love those moments. I just love music and live for it, it has cost me a lot and has also rewarded me immeasurably in different ways. One thing is the pursuit of betterment with music will continue until I lay in the ground decomposing. JAH Bless! I am inspired by so many from so many genres of music/art/creation/destruction it would be pretty long winded for me to start a list. Basically I am inspired by any good music/art , regardless of style or definition. Life, photography, poetry, people, pets and my dreams. I hear many comparisons of my work to the more leftfield dubs of bill laswell, thievery corporation and Sly&Robbie which is definitely a compliment .My main endeavour is to get better at whatever I do in music and life. Exploring cultures, styles, Tao's to gain circumspection and mental freedom, and then morph it all together to hopefully result in a drop that is heavier by the nanosecond. Prowling after beauty in all forms...mesmeric or pugnacious, beyond the borders and preconceptions some have contrived for the masses. Not too sequenced and quantized, organic vivacity, human and open. While I was working
as a house drummer and composer for a jingle house in Canada I got the
bug of wanting my own studio, since then I have had many different conceptions
of that studio in the countries I have been moving around in. As I do
tend to move around a lot so my 'studio' is as portable as possible.
