Raise
the Dub
What is Dub Funk? Dub Funk is the bringing together of Reggae, Dub, Jazz, Techno and House music, which has been influenced by the Dubs out of Black Ark, Joe Gibbs, Channel One and King Tubby's Jamaican Studios during the 1970's-1980's. The Dub Funk of the 90's merges, borrows and re-arranges the aforementioned music types together, in an attempt to create another facet of the 90's dance/sound concept. The Dub or version B side of a reggae release was usually an interpretation of the singing or DJing A side. The dub would be a stripped down version with less vocals except for highlighted vocal phrases, layered with effects such as echoes, reverbs and flanges. Interwoven in the mix would be sounds like wildlife, warfare and off-the-wall FX, which were all used to good effect. (As featured on African Dub Chapter 3) The Dub Funk Association have always tried to marry different musical styles together but never forgetting their dub roots, check out the album tracks, 'Affairs Of The Heart', 'Afri', 'Put It Back', 'Rockers Dub', Dubonic', 'City Of Angels' and 'Raise The Dub' to name but a few. With these 14 complementary tracks we hope the listener will take a musical hour long journey with us into the world of Dub Fusion.
