Spirits Under Pressure
With the new album the 'Dub Funk' parameters are truly stretched, with the 'old school' dub spirituality and sensibility, seamlessly merging with nieties sounds. The Drum n Bass inspired opener 'In A Hard Place' is a fine example of taking the current musical climate on board while maintaining the distinct Dub Funk Association style. Although not a concept album, tracks such as 'death Trap' and 'Black City Dread' set the tone with it's dark, cold atmospherics, its spacial ambionics and sparse instrumentation. Telling vocal punctuations cut through this tracks, "don't you ever pull a gun again on me in your life", the reply, "sometimes we've got to do what's best, before he shoots down the youth under a barrage of bullets. Was Rodney King's betaing what was best? The journey through the dark and shadier side of life is localised on "Are You Satisfied?' (the albums only vocal cut) utilising the 'Style of Champions' rhythm. 'Solid' (aka recording artist and Echoes writer Tony Corbin) refers to a small town crack dealer who callously profits from 'Desperate Minds' lines such as "what do you get for what you provide/maybe a nice car?" insinuate that his wealth and status are limited by the controllers of this (under)world. Although set in an atmosphere of uncertainty, there is light, there is hope. The ecclesiastical vocal on 'Dub Of Angels', the soothing ambience of "Out From Space' together with the pride of 'African Theory' make this a wholly challenging but uplifting set. 'Spirts are under Pressure' but are fighting back with a vengeance!
